| Practical Strategies for Middle School Inclusion
Practical Steps for maximizing collaborative teaching effectiveness within the middle school setting
Middle school can be particularly difficult time of adjustment for students and parents alike. For special education students, new routines, academic success and just learning how to “fit in” can be particularly challenging.
Eileen Bowers, a veteran special education teacher, understands the difficulty. Having been involved in a ground-up inclusion program for the past half decade, she provides structured guidance for collaborative teaching teams. Transition to the middle school is made easier through use of a locker organizer, a generic study guide and a customized assignment template. Teachers are guided towards differentiated instruction through use of color-coded spelling word sheets, note-taking templates, suggestions for cooperative learning, tips on test preparation and suggestions for alternative assessment.
